The dangerous path of both honor and religious credit caused Santiagos untimely death. This was seen as good reason by the town, but it is clear that the boys still have to answer to God. In full, Marquez questions the motive of society. Maybe he is saying that one should stop worshiping something simply because is in front of him and put more faith in his beliefs. Stop putting so much emphasis on a hotshot event and focus on the whole. After all, all of the single events in our lives will eventually lead up to one single moment.

Moses Herzogs Confused Identity While Moses Herzog sits in the Chicago police ship after he has crashed his rental car, the storyteller of Saul Bellows work exclaims angrily, See Moses? We dont know one a nonher (299). This is the lone moment in the book where the narrator explicitly suggests some separation between himself and Herzog. Much of the rest of the novel provides an unclear division between the narrator and the main character. I would argue that this unclear division occurs because these devil figures, the narrator and Herzog, are in fact the same person. There are vitiated logistical hints in the text that this is true. except these small elements of the text exist alongside much larger similarities between Herzog, and the narrator. In the largest sense, the uncertainty, the subjectivity that the narrator evinces in telling Herzogs story shows just how similar he is to the character he is describing. In the end even the quote that began this paper, the remark tha t ostensibly creates the strongest division between the narrator and Herzog, is evidence that these two figures are rattling the same - that Herzog is really narrating his own story. The most visible element of the book that suggests some conflation of the narrator and Herzog is the narrators confused pronoun use for Herzog. On occasion, the narrator confusingly refers to Herzog not in the third person as he but instead in the first person as I, seemingly adopting Herzogs voice. Some of the times that this happens, it seems a stylistic device, such as when the narration is given in Herzogs voice, directly after Herzogs letters. Herzog writes to Madeleines mother Tennie, before thinking about what he has just written Its in the vault, in Pitts... ...rose colored glasses. Similarly, Herzog having this emotional experience would not allow the narrator to empathize with, and thus understand Nachman. But it does. The narrator is, and would only be able to utilize Herzogs own emotional intelligence in narrating the story, because the narrator is Herzog. The confused pronoun references throughout the text strongly suggest that the narrator and Herzog are one. But the less overt moments, where the reader is brought to see the emotional closeness of Herzog and the narrator, are the truly convincing signals that these two figures are one. Even the question that ostensibly sets the two figures apart, in fact contains many of the similarities between the two figures. When Moses tells himself, See Moses? We dont know one another, Moses is, in fact, keeping with all the uncertainties that define him as a character.

The poet clearly expresses that he is existently afraid of the power of God, and what God is able to do. Throughout the verse form the poet expresses his admiration, his wonder and his fear, this poem is as much a study of the tiger as a study of God.EmotionThough the poe m is mostly descriptive, the poet gives the referee some clues of the emotions that he feels. The image of this creation is very frightful to Blake, let alone the God, the person who hammered, twisted, and shaped this beast. It should also be noted the could was replaced with dare. This shows that first Blake further thought about the ability, skill, power and strength needed to create the tiger. Later on at the end of the poem, Blake is thinking about the nerve and the daring required to create the tiger.CraftsmanshipStructureThe poem has a very regular structure, it is divided into six stanzas, each with four lines. The poe t seems to the reader as a thinker trying to find out the answer to a very difficult question. The poet is asking questions that can not be answered for very little is known about God.The verbiage is also very striking, very vivid and useful. The language catch the readers attention and is imaginative. It is very appropriate to the poem itself, the language increases the fear and adds effect to the wonder. The words does deliver the message that the poet intends. Much of the language helps to strike the fear into the minds of the readers. When reading this poem, one can not help but feel a sense of awe to the tiger and God.ImageryIn the poem there are no striking examples of similes and metaphors, but the poet does use a large amount of personification. He personifies God as a craftsman or a blacksmithAnd what shoulder & what art,Could twist the sinews of thy heart?The poet seems to apply his own life experiences to his image of God. He sees God as this craftsman working by a fur nace like himself. He sees the material the God uses to create as metallic elementlic. In the process of creation, God works like a blacksmith, heating the metal until the critical point is reached, the metal is then taken out and hammered into shape. This process repeats until the perfect shape is reached. Once the work is finished, God must be pleased and proud of his creations like other artists.The poet also personifies the tiger, addressing the tiger as if the tiger was able to understand him. He asks the tiger questions as though the tiger was able to answer him and explain to him what the poet does not understand. The poet also personifies the starsWhen the stars threw down their spears ,And watered the heavens with their tearsThe poet sees the stars as the angels of heaven, throwing down their weapons and crying at such a wonderful creation.The poet makes the reader see God as a human with tow sides, power and the strength represented by the tiger, while the dark caring si de represented by the lamb. This in many ways is the symbolism used throughout the poem by the poet.MovementThere is not real rhythm or movement to the poem itself. There are no real rhythmic qualities in the poem. However, when read out loud, the poem should be read out slowly, and loudly. This adds to the effect of the poem, it gives one more time to process the carefully chose words. It would make the poem more effective and allow the listener to truly lever the poem.SoundsThe most significant sound feature of the poem is its rhyming scheme. Each stanza rhymes in the form of AABB, with the exception of the last line of the first and last stanza of the poem. The poet uses neither onomatopoeia nor alliteration nor assonance.In fact the poem uses very little sound features. I do however think that onomatopoeia could have been used to help the reader to imagine the sounds of this great workshop that Blake pictures in his mind. It would help the reader reach a better level of underst anding. It would have also made the poem more affective.The poem is very strong with the visual part of the imagery, however, without the sounds, the perception of the poets idea is in accomplish. For example, if the poet included the bangs, clangs of the workshop, or even included the growls and the roars of the tiger. This would have increased ones sense of wonder and awe.Other sound features such as alliteration and assonance, I feel, would not have been as effective and would not have helped the understanding of the poets imagination.SummaryThe poem has had a very strong impact on me. The poem has made me aware that the world is made up of fierceness and strength (shown in the tiger) as well as gentleness and peace (as shown in the lamb). Blakes tiger is a very terrifying and propulsive creation, which apart from being seen to represent the fiercer side of God, could also be seen to represent the forces of evil lurking in our world. This evil seems to be able to hide in the ma sking piece of the darkness of the night, and haunts our minds through our dreams and especially our nightmares. Blakes lamb (Did he who made the lamb also make thee?) apart from being a symbol of Gods gentle and loving side, can also be seen as a symbol of all the good in the world the caring, the love and the kindness shown in delivery boy Christ himself.The poem, as I have already noted, is a very visual poem. Though it is read, the poem inspires us to try and picture what he sees. The words of the poem create very vivid, clear and striking images in the reader or listeners minds. We see dynamic beast with awesome features, a skilful and great craftsman working laboriously in his great workshop. Inside the workshop burns a great furnace with huge and very calefacient fire. The craftsman hammers and twists the shape of the creation, and when finally he has released this marvellous work, he is proud and smiles. The angels around this creator all weep and throw down their weapons at the sight of this marvel.The only flaw that I have noted is the lack of use of sound features. This poem, as I have already mentioned, would more complete if the reader can hear the sounds of the workshop and hear the weeps of the angels or even the deafening roars of the tiger as it first leaps out of the furnace as a complete creation. This does not flaw the poem in a significant way, but I feel that it would improve the poem and make the poem more effective Blake made use of sound features.

In the stories A Rose for Emily, Young Goodman Brown and Good Country People, all of the main characters experience closing off from the society. To begin, William Faulkners A rose for Emily shows the reader about lonely woman.Emily, the protagonist, has fallen shoot down the social ladder and cannot recognize that time is moving forward, meaning that everything is changing. In her funeral, the beginning of the story from No one save an old manservant a feature gardener and cook- had seen in at least ten years (Faulkner 84). Nobody has been to her house in ten years, except for her servant. This sets the framework for Emilys isolation in living by beginning with her funeral. At the beginning of the story, even though his wife, Faith, tries to dissuade him, Goodman Brown, he leaves on the trip anyway and meets old man.When he follows him on a gloomy fo tolerate, he sees many people such as Goody Cloyse, pious woman, and the minister of the church and Deacon Gookin, who are also apparently on their way to the ceremony. Goodman Brown was Shocked he swears that even though everyone else in the world has gone to the devil, for Faiths sake he will stay true to God. However, he soon hears voices coming from the cer emony and thinks he recognizes Faiths voice. Faith ignores when he screams and has turned to evil. The next morning Goodman Brown return to Salem Village, and every person he passes seems evil to him.He does not trust anyone in his village. He lives the rest of his invigoration in gloom and fear. This short story is famous for being representation of American Romantic literature. The reader can find just a few important quotes from the short story. In the forest Brown saw a mixture of pious and dissolute people, and it was strange to see that the good shrank not from the wicked, nor were the sinners abashed by the saints (331). Brown chose to see that all were evil and lost his chance at redemption when he chose to isolate himself and to shrink from his Faith and expletive man. By the sympathy of your human hearts for sin ye shall scent out all the placeswhether in church, bedchamber, street, field, or forestwhere crime has been committed, and shall exult to behold the substantia l earth one stain of guilt, one mighty blood spot (332). Near the end of the story, Goodman Brown has seen the evil in every person, and it causes isolating of his life. The choice is dream or reality.Whatever the reader chooses to believe, Goodman Browns own horrible doubts create a central theme of the tale (Fogel 21). Hawthornes mental and moral beliefs are revealed throughout Young Goodman Brown. Puritans believed that the fall of Adam was the inheritance of all men, and that redemption came only through Christ. Hawthorne came to believe that the fall was by human contrivance, that damnation is not inherited just now chosen and is redeemable through human agency. (Adams 5) The devil reminds Brown about the past and the devil knows his father and grandfather from past encounters.Theme is hypocrisy and deception that would describe the devils temptations and promises to Goodman Brown, his father, his grandfather, and anyone else. Other theme would be isolation because of the location where Goodman Brown is at which is a dark forest where he is all alone with no one in the area. The short story, Good orbit people by OConnor, also has a character of isolation. This story starts in rural Georgia Mrs. Hope substantially runs her family farm with the table service of tenants Mr. and Mrs. Freeman. Mrs. Hopewells daughter, Joy, who got her leg cut off in an accident when she was a child.She now lives at home with her mother. Thirty-three-year-old Joy has earned a PhD in philosophy, but she does not seem to have much common sense. In an act of rebellion, she has changed her name to Hulga, and she lives in a state of annoyed anger at her mother and Mrs. Freeman. A Bible salesman comes to the door, claiming his name is Manly Pointer, and manages to get invited to dinner. He and Hulga make a date to have a picnic together the next day. That night Hulga imagines with her topping mind and education that she is in control and that she will seduce him.However, the next day by the time they have climbed into a barn loft, Manly manages to bias her to take off her glasses and then her wooden leg which he packs in a suitcase, between a Bible which is really a boxful with liquor and pornographic cards in it. As Manly leaves Hulga without her false leg, he tells her that he collects prostheses from the disabled. She is shocked to realize that he is not good country people. Hulga, main character, is always trying to escape from the Southern social conventions and stereotypes in which her mother and Mrs. Freeman are immersed.Hulga is self-assured about her self and her vision of life and people from a nihilistic and atheist point of view as she says in this story, If science is right, then one thing stand firm apprehension wishes to know nothing of nothing. Such is after all the stri ctly scientific approach to nothing. we knows it by wishing to know nothing of nothing. (381) She is also very noble-minded of her education with a Ph. D. in Philosophy. Hulga rejects any possibility of mixing with the people around her. She creates a condition of self-isolation in her life. You poor baby. its just as well you dont understand. (389) The young woman fails to see that there is much more to life than what you can learn in a book. Due to a heart condition, however, Hulga is obligate to remain home on the farm, instead of being in an academic setting where her education would be recognized and encouraged. This attitude that she is above most other people isolates Hulga from everyone around her. Hulga does not understand herself as innocent indeed, she considers herself quite experienced because her education has given her access to philosophers such as Nietzsche, whose words she underlines with a blue pencil science wishes to know nothing of nothing. (Ditsky 3) These short stories have lonely characters, Emily, Goodman Brown, and Hulga, who avoid from their family or society. These stories authors teach the reader that they can find isolation in processing when the main characters fight against their life. There is one thing common ground between them. That is a tragic fate at the end of their isolation from the world. However, if they think a little differently, the result does not have to be tragic. Thus, the reader can learn a lesson from these stories that we need to stay substantiating and not become a part of the isolation.
